Mt. Vernon came tearing into Tuesday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Centralia Orphans a 3-0 shutout. The Rams were shut out 1-0 the last time they took on the Orphans, so the Rams were just returning the favor.

The result came thanks to Cale Maurer's shutout, as he gave up just three hits and racked up 14 Ks. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Mt. Vernon is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 7-12 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Mt. Vernon saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Bronx Hefner, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That's the most hits Hefner has posted over his last 11 contests.

Mt. Vernon pushed their record up to 9-13 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.4 runs over those games. As for Centralia, they moved to 11-9 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Mt. Vernon will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Orphans: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
