High school football: Calvin Mullins of Tennessee tops national rushing yardage leaderboard

Coming off fourth 300-yard performance in a row, Lake County senior is nearing 2,000 on the season.

According to statistics submitted to MaxPreps, Calvin Mullins of Lake County (Tiptonville, Tenn.) is high school football's national leader in rushing yards.

In seven games this season, Mullins has run for 1,898 yards and 25 touchdowns. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound senior has been virtually unstoppable in his last four outings, averaging 348 yards per game in those contests – all wins for Lake County. In a 38-19 win over Halls on Sept. 15, he ran 43 times for a school-record 416 yards and five touchdowns.

Hunter Babb of Caruthers (Calif.) is No. 2 on the list at 1,851 yards and 25 touchdowns with one less game under his belt than Mullins. The 5-9, 185-pound senior has posted totals of 440, 364 and 331 this season.

Kentucky Mr. Football candidate Daniel Thomas of Bell County (Pineville, Ky.) is No. 3 with 1,845 yards and 29 touchdowns. Last week in a 40-38 loss to Rockcastle County, Thomas carried the mail 42 times for 371 yards and five scores. As a junior, he ran for 2,228 yards with 29 trips to the end zone.
