Mater Academy Charter skates past Varela with ease

Recap: Mater Academy Charter Lions vs. Varela Vipers

The Mater Academy Charter Lions scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They claimed a resounding 69-42 win over Varela on the road. Given Mater Academy Charter's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 314th, while Varela is ranked 629th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mater Academy Charter was led to victory by Ethan Davis and Alex Valencia. Davis scored 17 points along with eight rebounds, while Valencia scored 20 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Valencia has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Sebastian Tello, who scored three points along with six assists and six rebounds.

Mater Academy Charter is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-5 record this season. As for Varela, they have fallen quite a ways from their 14-7 record last season and are now at 3-9.

Mater Academy Charter won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Mater Brickell Academy at 1:00 p.m. on January 13th. Hopefully Mater Brickell Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Friday. As for Varela, they will be playing in front of their home fans against South Miami at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
