Varela and Archbishop McCarthy squared off in some playoff action on Thursday, but Varela had to settle for second. They took an 8-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mavericks. The Vipers' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Varela saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was JC Hernandez, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Another was Jiovanni Zara, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

Varela's defeat dropped their record down to 19-8-2. As for Archbishop McCarthy, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-12 record this season.

While Varela had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
