Basketball Recap: Savannah Phillips Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Goddard

While Arkansas City didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with a 41-28 victory over the Goddard Lions on Tuesday. Given the Bulldogs' advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 15th, while the Lions are ranked 186th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Arkansas City's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Savannah Phillips, who posted 11 points and five rebounds. Maliyah Bell was another key player, going 5 of 8 on her way to 11 points and five rebounds.

Despite the defeat, Goddard saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Presley Schmidt had 13 points and three steals.

Arkansas City's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-0. As for Goddard, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-5.

Arkansas City will challenge Newton on Friday. As for Goddard, they will take on North at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
