Basketball Recap: Wootton Comes Up Short

Wootton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They were five points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 51-46 heartbreaker at the hands of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons. While losing is never fun, the Patriots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 132nd, while the Barons are ranked 14th).

Despite the loss, Wootton saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Malia Bellamy posted 18 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. Those five steals set a new season-high mark for Bellamy. Another player making a difference was Maya Bellamy, who put up nine points and six boards.

Even though they lost, Wootton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive rebounds in four consecutive matchups.

Wootton's defeat dropped their record down to 4-6. As for Bethesda-Chevy Chase, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 11-0.
