Baseball Game Preview: South Cougars vs. Goddard Lions

A feisty cat fight will be fought as South Cougars take on Goddard Lions at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, South and Goddard will really light up the scoreboard.

The Lions will be up against a hot the Cougars team: the squad just extended their winning streak to four. The Cougars' pitchers stepped up to hand the Titans a 15-0 shutout on Monday.

Landon Putman looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (three).

At the plate, Jace Humphrey was a standout: he scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-2. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in doubles (two). Yaden Montanez was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2.

The Cougars always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .760. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Meanwhile, Goddard earned a 14-10 win over Valley Center on Thursday.

Lincoln Jensen was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Jensen was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Bryer Rojas was incredible, scoring three runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Taylor Cape, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

The Cougars' victory bumped their record up to 4-2. As for Goddard, the win got them back to even at 1-1.

Everything went South's way against Goddard in their previous meeting back in April of 2018, as South made off with a 13-1 victory. Will South repeat their success, or does Goddard has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
