League recap: Fort Collins tops Rocky Mountain to extend winning streak

5A Front Range recap Oct. 30, 2012

Fort Collins extended the longest winning streak in 5A Front Range this week by beating Rocky Mountain, 38-17. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Lambkins.

Horizon took down Fossil Ridge 36-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Dante Chand ran for 256 yards in the win.

Elijah Rocha made the biggest impact on defense this week as Mountain Range beat Poudre. The 5-foot-4 senior pulled down three interceptions.

Travis Avila provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Sabercats lost to the Hawks. He completed 21 passes for 218 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 45 yards. Avila's favorite target this week was Eric Lanza, who caught five passes for 67 yards.

Spencer Long was the best wideout in the league this week as the Impalas fell to the Mustangs. Long tallied three receptions for 82 yards. Dan Pinkston helped Poudre's passing attack out by catching three balls for 23 yards.

Caleb Seeton put up the best numbers through the air as Fort Collins bested the Lobos. He finished with a total of seven completions for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Seeton's favorite target this week was Riley Waldie, who caught one pass for 53 yards.

Fossil Ridge's Avila and Corey Peter have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Avila has thrown for 1977 yards this season, while Peter, a 6-foot-4 receiver, has 47 catches for 819 yards. Gabe Gellespie from Mountain Range leads the league in rushing with 780 yards.

Going into this week's game against Hinkley, Steve Vecchio's team's Avila needs 23 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season.

Eric Rice's team led 5A Front Range in scoring this week after putting up 38 points on Rocky Mountain. Seeton ran for 71 yards in the win.
