Softball Recap: Nocona Has No Trouble Against Chico

Nocona won against Alvord last Friday with nine runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Monday. The Indians were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over the Chico Dragons. The Indians might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by six runs or more this season.

Reagan Phipps was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two triples, one run, and one RBI. Those two triples gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Skye Kirby, who scored three runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Gwyndelyn Forsyth, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.

The victory made it two in a row for Nocona and bumps their season record up to 15-8. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 4-10 Alvord and 12-13 Chico. As for Chico, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-13 record this season.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Nocona is set to take on their familiar foe Lindsay at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Chico will face off against rival Alvord at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
