Baseball Recap: Coxsackie-Athens Snaps Six-Game Streak of Wins at Home

Coxsackie-Athens dropped their record down to 12-4 on Wednesday, which also ended the team's six-game streak of wins at home. They took an 8-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Chatham Panthers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 4-2 back in April.

Coxsackie-Athens saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alex Slater, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Andrew Sager was another, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

As for Chatham, they have been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.9 runs over those games.

On Chatham's side, Logan Smalley was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Smalley has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hunter Kelly, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Cooper Steltz, who went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Coincidentally, Coxsackie-Athens and Chatham will both be playing Maple Hill the next time they take the field. The Panthers will head out to face the Wildcats at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, while the Riverhawks will head out to face them at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
