The Jefferson Area Falcons will head out to square off against the Boardman Spartans at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Jefferson Area is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for Jefferson Area after they put the first run on the board on Saturday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 15-8 to Pymatuning Valley, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Falcons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Marillia Matuz was cooking despite her team's loss, going 4-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Rylee Demattia, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Boardman faced Canfield in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Spartans were the clear victors by a 13-3 margin over the Cardinals. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 15 matchups by six runs or more this season.
Tori Strines made a splash while hitting and pitching. She pitched six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. Strines was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.
In other batting news, Addie Rudge was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run and five RBI. Jocelynn Torres was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Boardman always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .559. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .541 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Boardman is on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 16 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Jefferson Area, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-13.
Monday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Jefferson Area has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .464. However, it's not like Boardman struggles in that department as they've averaged .449. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Jefferson Area skirted past Boardman 3-1 in their previous meeting back in April of 2016. Will the Falcons repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
