Softball Game Preview: Baker Gators vs. Freeport Bulldogs

The Baker Gators are taking a road trip to challenge the Freeport Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Baker is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 13 runs per game this season.

Baker blew Destin out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Monday Destin got their revenge. Baker fell just short of Destin by a score of 11-9. The Gators' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Emily Whiddon was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and nine unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Whiddon wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Abigail Griffin, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4. Griffin is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Another was Zoe Moncada, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Meanwhile, Freeport was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat dating back to last season. They fell 9-5 to South Walton.

Annsleigh Withey was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles. Faith McDonald was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Having lost for the first time this season, Baker fell to 3-1. As for Freeport, their record now sits at 0-2.

Everything went Baker's way against Freeport in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Baker made off with a 10-4 win. Will Baker repeat their success, or does Freeport have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
