Basketball Game Preview: Capistrano Valley Christian Eagles vs. San Gabriel Academy Eagles

We've got a battle between Eagles coming up. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Capistrano Valley Christian sitting on 17 straight victories and San Gabriel Academy on three.

Capistrano Valley Christian is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They had just enough and edged El Toro out 74-72. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 154th, while the Chargers are ranked 368th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Matthew Ahern and Michael Ahern were among the main playmakers for Capistrano Valley Christian as the former went 11-for-16 en route to 27 points and the latter went 7-for-9 to rack up 19 points. That's the most points Matthew has posted since back in December of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Benjamin Makelela, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Capistrano Valley Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 11 consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, San Gabriel Academy didn't have too much trouble with South on Friday as they won 67-52.

San Gabriel Academy's win bumped their record up to 15-12. As for Capistrano Valley Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 26-4.

Capistrano Valley Christian took a serious blow against San Gabriel Academy in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, falling 66-37. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Capistrano Valley Christian was down 37-16.
