Baseball Game Preview: Godwin Eagles vs. Benedictine Cadets

The Godwin Eagles are taking a road trip to face off against the Benedictine Cadets at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Godwin is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.

Godwin proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by 20) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Freeman a 2-0 shutout. The two-run effort marked the Eagles' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Not much got past Luke Smyers, who gave up just three hits and racked up 11 Ks to keep Freeman off the board. Smyers has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Godwin saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matthew Hartsfield, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. Hartsfield is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played. Carter Donham also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 11 runs the game before, Benedictine was a bit more limited in their contest on Saturday. They fell just short of Flint Hill by a score of 1-0.

Godwin pushed their record up to 12-2 with the win, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for Benedictine, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-15-1 record this season.
