Family is one the greatest things to be thankful for, and with that in mind, MaxPreps details the Top 10 family names in prep sports.
THE MATTHEWSFive members of the Matthews family have played in the NFL, starting with Clay Sr. in the 1950s with the San Francisco 49ers. His two sons, Clay Jr. and Bruce, each played 19 years in the NFL, Clay Jr. mostly with Cleveland and Bruce with the Houston Oilers. Clay Jr. coached both of his sons in high school as an assistant. Clay III played at
Agoura (Calif.) before ultimately reaching the NFL with the Green Bay Packers. Casey played at
Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) and is with the Philadelphia Eagles. Bruce's son Kevin, who played at
Fort Bend Elkins (Missouri City, Texas), is a lineman for the Tennessee Titans. Bruce's other son Jake, also an Elkins grad, plays for Texas A&M.
THE MANNINGSPatriarch Archie grew up in Mississippi and attended
Drew Hunter (Drew, Miss.) before going on to play for the New Orleans Saints in the NFL. His sons, Peyton and Eli, both prepped at
Newman (New Orleans) before embarking on highly successful NFL careers that include each having won a Super Bowl championship.
THE BARRYSVoted one of the Top 50 NBA players of all time, Rick Barry began his basketball career at
Roselle Park (N.J.). His four sons, Scooter, John, Brent and Drew, all played in the NBA after getting their start at
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.). The Barrys' maternal grandfather, Bruce Hale, was a standout at
Galileo (San Francisco) in the 1930s before playing during the inaugural season of the NBA in the late 1940s.
THE GRIFFEYSKen Griffey Sr. played at Donora (Pa.) , which is now defunct, and had a long Major League career with the Cincinnati Reds. His son Ken Griffey Jr. prepped at
Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) and had a Hall of Fame career with the Reds and the Seattle Mariners. His son,
Trey Griffey, is a wide receiver at
Dr. Phillips (Orlando, Fla.).
THE RIVERSBoston Celtics coach Glenn 'Doc' Rivers was a standout basketball player at
Proviso East (Maywood, Ill.), the same school where his uncle, Jim Brewer, also attended. Both Rivers and Brewer went on to long NBA careers. Rivers' son Austin was the No. 1 prospect in the country last year out of
Winter Park (Fla.). Rivers is also a cousin to former NBA player Byron Irvin, who attended
Julian (Chicago), and MLB All-Star Ken Singleton (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.).
THE RIPKENSCal Ripken Jr. is the most famous of the Ripken clan, thanks to a Hall of Fame career with the Baltimore Orioles. However Cal's father, Cal Ripken Sr., was a longtime coach with the Orioles and his brother Billy also played on the team. Both attended
Aberdeen (Md.). Cal Jr.'s son
Ryan Ripken is one of the top high school first basemen in the country, prepping at
Gilman (Baltimore).
THE SCHOFIELDS/WERTHSDucky Schofield and his son Dick, natives of Springfield (Ill.), both had Major League careers while Dick's sister Kim participated in the Olympic Trials in the 100 meters. Kim's son JaYson Werth, who attended
Glenwood (Chatham, Ill.), is one of the top outfielders in the Major Leagues while her daughter Hannah is a member of the volleyball team at the University of Nebraska. Their stepfather, Dennis Werth, played in the Major Leagues for the Royals and the Yankees.
THE TUIASOSOPOSFormer Seattle Seahawk and San Francisco 49er Manu Tuiasosopo comes from a long line of relatives who have played in the NFL. The
St. Anthony (Long Beach, Calif.) grad has two sons who played professional sports with Marques playing for the Oakland Raiders of the NFL and Matt playing Major League Baseball. Both prepped at
Woodinville (Wash.). Their cousins include former NFL players Frank Manumaleuna, Terry Tautolo, John Tautolo and Bob Apisa.
THE PARISESBubba Paris played for the San Francisco 49ers during the 1980s, but he grew up in Louisville, Ky., and went to
DeSales (Louisville, Ky.). His son David Paris played on a state championship team at
Modesto Christian (Calif.) and later for the Cal Bears. Bubba's daughters Courtney and Ashley led
Piedmont (Calif.) to state championships and were college standouts at the University of Oklahoma.
THE BROWNERSBrowners are a familiar name in the NFL with four brothers, Ross, Jim, Joey and Keith, all making their mark in the league. Ross and Jim both attended
Western Reserve (Collins, Ohio) while Joey and Keith played at
Southwest (Macon, Ga.). Ross' son Max Starks grew up in Florida and attended
Lake Highland Prep (Orlando, Fla.) and is currently an NFL lineman. Keith's son Keith Jr. played at
Dorsey (Los Angeles) and is a linebacker at Cal.
