Preview: Ponderosa Mustangs vs. Chaparral Wolverines
Ponderosa is 1-9 against Chaparral since February of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Ponderosa Mustangs will square off against the Chaparral Wolverines at 5:30 p.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Last Saturday, Ponderosa had to suffer through a rough 66-23 loss at the hands of Pine Creek. While losing is never fun, Ponderosa can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 145th, while Pine Creek is ranked 21st).
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Chaparral's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They were dealt a 66-30 defeat at the hands of Cherokee Trail.
Despite the defeat, Chaparral saw an underclassman step up: Lauren Thompson scored 12 points. Thompson is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jade Monroe, who scored 7 points.
Fruita Monument's win bumped their season record to 0-0 while Ponderosa's loss dropped theirs to 2-2.
Ponderosa was dealt a bruising 59-17 loss at the hands of Chaparral when the teams last played back in February. Thankfully for Ponderosa, Kiley Smich (who scored 14 points along with 7 rebounds and 6 steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
