Basketball Recap: West Campus Finds Playoff Glory Versus Sonora

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but West Campus had no problem doing just that on Wednesday. They had just enough and edged out the Sonora Wildcats 59-57. This was payback for the Warriors, who suffered a 65-60 loss the last time these two teams met.

It was another big night for Zach Villanueva, who dropped a double-double with 18 points and ten assists. His evening made it eight games in a row in which he has scored at least 18 points. Tyson Jiang was another key player, going 7-for-12 en route to 17 points.

Several Wildcats players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Luke Otterson, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 11 boards. Otterson is becoming a predictor of Sonora's success: when he posts at least eight rebounds the team is 14-4 (and 3-8 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Noah Wright, who went 5-for-10 on his way to 15 points.

West Campus is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 18-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.5 points over those games. Sonora's defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 17-12.

Coming up, West Campus will take on Natomas at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Natomas is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 71 points per game this season. Sonora does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
