Austin Pacheco connects from deep to beat Bishop Manogue, but it's still 4 yards short of the national record held by another Nevadan.
Carson (Carson City, Nev.) senior
Austin Pacheco accomplished something on Saturday afternoon that is rarely seen in any level of football.
The 6-foot, 170-pound senior booted a 64-yard field goal on fourth-and-13 with 27 seconds to lift Carson to a 27-24 victory over
Bishop Manogue (Reno, Nev.).
"I knew it was going to go," Pacheco told the
Reno Gazette-Journal. "I could see I played the wind perfectly. It was a good snap and a good hold, and I got a good kick on it. Everything worked out."
The field goal was Pacheco's second of the game. He also blasted five kickoffs for touchbacks and made seven tackles on defense.
The record for longest field goal made at the high school level belongs to another Nevadan, Dirk Borgognone, who kicked a 68-yarder for
Reno (Nev.) on Sept. 27, 1985.
Carson head coach Blair Roman named Pacheco his team's
U.S. Air Force Player of the Week for his performance, which moved Carson to 3-1 on the season.
"They [Bishop Manogue] beat us here two years ago with a 47-yarder and we got them today on just an unbelievable, unbelievable kick," Roman said.
