Basketball Recap: Make It Five in a Row for Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay hadn't done well against St. Mary recently (they were 0-4 in their previous four matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Half Moon Bay Cougars came out on top in a nail-biter against the St. Mary's Rams, sneaking past 71-68. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 41st, while the Rams are ranked 399th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

When it comes to explaining why St. Mary's lost, don't look at Jonah Millonida. Despite the final result, he went 9 for 14 on his way to 22 points. Millonida is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. William Weathington was another key player, going 5 for 12 on his way to 12 points.

The win (which was Half Moon Bay's fifth in a row) raised their record to 6-1. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.6 points per game. As for St. Mary's, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-7.

Half Moon Bay will head out to challenge Menlo School at 3:00 p.m. on January 4, 2025. Half Moon Bay knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past four contests -- so hopefully Menlo School likes a good challenge. As for St. Mary's, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against North Monterey County at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
