High school basketball: Five-star Duke signee Isaiah Evans pours in 48 points to guide North Mecklenburg to upset victory over No. 4 Myers Park

In the most highly anticipated game of the season in the Tar Heel State, five-star Duke signee Isaiah Evans poured in a season-high 48 points to guide North Mecklenburg (Huntersville) to a 79-63 upset victory over No. 4 Myers Park (Charlotte) in the NCHSAA Class 4A state quarterfinals Friday night.

Evans put on a scoring clinic in the thrilling victory, including 21 consecutive points for the Vikings during a third-quarter stretch that helped extend North Mecklenburg's lead to 56-36 at the end of the third quarter.

The scoring flurry began with a four-point play as Evans was fouled when banking home a 3-pointer from the top of the key. He followed that up with a blocked shot on the other end that led to his transition layup after a euro-step through two defenders.

Evans continued his barrage with a deep trey from the right wing to extend the Vikings lead to 42-30. Evans hit on back-to-back 3-pointers on the next two possessions. He followed that up with a tough fade-away shot from a step inside three-point range before converting a tough layup to extend the margin to 52-36.

Teammate Chadlyn Traylor ended Evans personal run with a mid-range jump shot before Exzavier Young converted a pair of free throws to lengthen the gap to 56-36.

Although Myers Park scored the first six points in the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to as low as 63-50 with 2:30 remaining, they were unable to fully overcome the lopsided lead.

A high-paced first eight minutes of action saw Myers Park jump out to a 21-15 lead at the end of the first quarter before a steal from four-star Tennessee signee Bishop Boswell put the Mustangs up 25-15 approximately one minute into the second quarter.

North Mecklenburg rebounded strong with a 16-1 run to close out the second quarter as they held Myers Park without a field goal for over seven minutes of game action to take a 31-26 lead into the halftime intermission behind 15 first-half points from Evans.

It was reported that tickets were sold out to the highly anticipated game within one minute of going on sale earlier in the day.

North Mecklenburg (28-3) advance to the state semifinals where they will face Lake Norman (Mooresville) on Thursday.

Myers Park (27-3) were led by a team-high 24 points from four-star Notre Dame signee Sir Mohammed.
