Football Recap: Yulee Hornets vs. Union County Fightin' Tigers

Yulee couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They were just a hair shy of victory on Friday and fell 14-13 to the Union County Fightin' Tigers.

Several Hornets players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Preston Matricardi, who rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries, and also threw for 107 yards and a touchdown. Tj Williamson was another key back, picking up 86 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Yulee wouldn't let Union County keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force three fumbles. Yulee can thank Braelyn Jones and Joe Almonord for forcing all of them. Amauri Goff was another major factor on D, making 13 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Union County found their leader in underclassman Drew Simmons, who rushed for 176 yards and a touchdown while picking up 9.8 yards per carry.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Yulee will head out to face off against Clay at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Union County, they will square off against Keystone Heights at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
