Softball Recap: Smith County Comes Up Short

Smith County extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 7-4 in the process. They came up short against the Monterey Wildcats, falling 11-0. The Owls were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

As for Monterey, they now have a winning record of 7-6-1. Considering they have won six matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

For Monterey's part, Alexandrea Novak made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Novak has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 13 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with three RBI.

In other batting news, Haylee Garthwait was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Kaylin Shepherd, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

Smith County has already played their next contest (against Jackson County), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Monterey, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 19-1 win against Pickett County on the 10th.
