Football Recap: St. Mary's Undefeated Season over After Five Games

St. Mary's game on Friday was all tied up 7-7 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They took a 21-14 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Gila Ridge Hawks. The game marked the Knights' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Even if they lost, St. Mary's defense still kept up the pressure with 3.5 sacks. David Sanders refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself. Another thorn in Gila Ridge's side was Sanders, who picked up 1.5 sacks and made seven total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Gila Ridge got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Isaac Soliz out in front who threw for 233 yards and a pair of TDs. Kanai Hongo helped Soliz out on the ground, picking up 94 receiving yards and one score, while also rushing for 31 yards.

Having lost for the first time this season, St. Mary's fell to 4-1. As for Gila Ridge, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 4-1.

Looking ahead, St. Mary's will host Peoria at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The contest will give the Knights their first taste of in-conference action this season. As for Gila Ridge, they will square off against Yuma at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Hawks will be up against the Criminals' rather soft defense (which has allowed 34.75 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
