Softball Recap: Downers Grove South Takes a Loss

Downers Grove South had lost five straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 11-17 to make it six. They lost 7-0 to the York Dukes. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mustangs of the 8-7 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for York, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 20-11 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games.

For York's part, not much got past Avery Kanouse, who gave up just six hits and racked up eight Ks to keep Downers Grove South off the board.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Sara Steinecker, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Myka Matykiewicz, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two runs.

Looking ahead, Downers Grove South will head out to face off against Lincoln-Way East at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for York, they will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Downers Grove North at 10:00 a.m.
