Basketball Recap: Rio Vista Comes Up Short

After flying high against Valley Mills last Tuesday, Rio Vista came back down to earth. The Rio Vista Eagles were just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 49-48 to the Meridian Yellowjackets. The Eagles were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Yellowjackets apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.

When it comes to explaining why Rio Vista lost, don't look at Dawson Macklin. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 23 points and 11 boards. That's the most points Macklin has posted since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Anthony Zepeda, who posted five points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Rio Vista smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 30 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Rio Vista dropped their record down to 10-10 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.3 points per game. As for Meridian, their record now sits at 14-4.

Rio Vista will venture away from home to square off against Bosqueville at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Bosqueville has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Meridian, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Valley Mills at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meridian is facing Valley Mills at the right time seeing as Valley Mills is stuck on a ten-game losing streak.
