Softball Recap: Canandaigua Academy Comes Up Short

Canandaigua Academy had lost 11 straight at home dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 1-15 to make it 12. They lost 9-2 to the Gates Chili Spartans. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-2 on Saturday.

As for Gates Chili, they moved to 4-10 with that victory, which also ended their five-game losing streak. They not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since April 9th (when they won 19-7).

For Gates Chili's part, Payton Kretser spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up six Ks. Kretser has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Mackenzie Brown and Janita Carley did most of the damage at the plate: Brown went 1-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Carley went 1-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most runs Brown has posted since back in April. Annaliese McGill was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Gates Chili beat Canandaigua Academy by a score of 9-2 later that day.
