Baseball Game Preview: Clay Eagles vs. Maumee Panthers

The Clay Eagles are taking a road trip to take on the Maumee Panthers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Clay came into their game on Monday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Riverdale, falling 10-1.

Clay got a good showing from George Edwards, who didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Edwards has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Clay saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Darin Fussell, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double. That double marked the first that Fussell has hit this season. Another was Brayden Toneff, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Maumee took care of business in their home opener (barely) on Monday. They won by a run and slipped past Swanton 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Panthers have posted since May 12, 2025.

Clay's defeat dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Maumee, their win bumped their record up to 1-0.

Clay skirted past Maumee 1-0 in their previous matchup back in March of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
