Baseball Recap: Leesville Wins Going Away Against Lagrange

Leesville was handed a heart-breaking two-run defeat in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against LaGrange on Thursday. The Wampus Cats blew past the Gators 15-1. The Wampus Cats haven't had any issues with the Gators recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

Layton Combs and Hunter Garton made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Combs pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Garton kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Leesville is 2-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 7-13-1 otherwise. At bat, Combs scored three runs and stole a base, while Garton got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base. Those three runs gave Combs a new career-high.

In other batting news, Creek Smith was incredible, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4. He is becoming a predictor of Leesville's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-14-1 when he doesn't). Daren Brown was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Leesville's win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-5 and their overall record up to 9-14-1. As for LaGrange, they are on a 13-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-21.

Looking ahead, Leesville will challenge Oakdale at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for LaGrange, they will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Northside Christian at 10:30 a.m.
