The Morrill Lions will take on the Gordon-Rushville Mustangs in a tournament on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Saturday, Morrill got the win against Sioux County by a conclusive 58-33. The Lions have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven contests by 22 points or more this season.
Ashwin Pittman continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, almost dropping a double-double on 21 points and nine assists. That makes it five consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Morrill's points. Another player making a difference was Osiris Saucedo, who posted eight points.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gordon-Rushville). They secured a 66-62 W over Leyton on Saturday.
Morrill better keep an eye on Daniel Martins. He was instrumental in Gordon-Rushville's win, dropping a double-double on 25 points and 11 boards. The dominant performance gave Martins a new career-high in points. Maddox Leeper was another key player, putting up ten points and eight rebounds.
They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Gordon-Rushville was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Morrill has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.7 points per game. As for Gordon-Rushville, their victory ended a seven-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-12.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Morrill has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 28.4 boards per game. However, it's not like Gordon-Rushville struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26.6 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
