Preview: Huguenot Falcons vs. Powhatan Indians

The Huguenot Falcons will be playing at home against the Powhatan Indians at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Even though Huguenot has not done well against Monacan recently (they were 0-8 in their previous eight matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Huguenot blew past Monacan 41-6 on the road. Given Huguenot's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia football rankings (they are ranked 83rd, while Monacan is ranked 201st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Huguenot's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jason Wright, who threw for 300 yards while picking up 14.3 yards per attempt. John Washington was another key contributor, rushing for 103 yards and a touchdown on only nine carries.

Meanwhile, Powhatan came tearing into Friday's contest with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12 points) and they left with even more momentum. They took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 49-6 victory over Richmond City School of the Arts.

Powhatan's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Matthew Layman, who threw for 161 yards and three touchdowns while completing 88.9% of his passes. Another player making a difference was Matt Henderson, who picked up 94 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

The win makes it two in a row for Huguenot and bumps their season record up to 7-2. As for Powhatan, they have yet to lose a match at home this season, leaving them with a 7-3 record.

Huguenot didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Powhatan when the teams last played back in September, but they still walked away with a 26-22 victory. Will Huguenot repeat their success, or does Powhatan have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
