Area Code Games begin 25th year

The Area Code Games celebrate their 25th year this summer when eight teams and close to 240 players take the field at Long Beach State's Blair Field starting Friday and running through Wednesday, Aug. 10.

The 240 players are divided into eight teams based on their geographical location, although some players are moved around to balance the rosters. The event annually showcases the top rising seniors in the country along with a handful of talented juniors.

MaxPreps will have daily updates from the Area Code Games starting Aug. 6.

Here's a look at the rosters for this year's Area Code Games:



Oakland A's
The Oakland A's used to be comprised of players from the Southeast, but this year the second Milwaukee Brewers team was disbanded and the Northern California players were placed on the A's. The Oakland club has one Perfect Game All-American in Steven Golden, an outfielder from St. Francis (Mountain View). Top pitchers to watch for on the A's include Freddy Avis of Menlo (Atherton), Ben Eckels of Davis, Tyler Ferguson of Clovis West (Fresno) and James Marvel of Campolindo (Moraga). Top position players include Golden, Max Dutto of San Ramon Valley (Danville), Anthony Hawkins of Fresno and Ryan Tellez of Elk Grove.

Texas Rangers
Comprised of players from Texas and Louisiana, the Rangers have some outstanding players, including six who are playing in either the Perfect Game Showcase or the Under Armour All-American Game. The infield will be impressive with CJ Hinojosa of Klein Collins (Spring, Texas) and Gavin Cecchini of Barbe (Lake Charles, La.), while Courtney Hawkins of Carroll (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Nick Williams of Ball (Galveston, Texas) give Texas one of the best outfields at the Area Code Games. The Rangers have one of the top catchers at the games in Acadiana's Stryker Trahan while Teddy Stankewicz of Southwest Christian (Fort Worth, Texas) is the team's top pitcher.

Chicago has one Perfect Game All-American in catcher Jason Goldstein of Highland Park (Ill.) and an Under Armour All-American in pitcher Ty Hensley, who is also a member of Team USA.

Thomas Nido of Orangewood Christian, an Under Armour All-American, is the team's top catching prospect.

Cincinnati Reds
Look for home runs to be flying off the bats of the members of the Reds. Made up of players from Arizona, Utah and Nevada, the Reds have four of the nation's top home run hitters in Joey Gallo of Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), Alex Bregman of Academy (Albuquerque, N.M.), Joey Curletta of Mountain Pointe (Phoenix) and Kayden Porter of Spanish Fork (Utah). Bergman and Gallo are both members of Team USA while Porter joins them on the Perfect Game Showcase West roster. Tate Matheney of Westminster Christian Academy (St. Louis, Mo.) is also on the squad. He's the son of former Cardinals and Giants catcher Mike Matheny.

New York Yankees

Milwaukee Brewers
To put it simply, the Brewers are loaded. There are a total of 15 players on the squad who are either members of Team USA, or are Perfect Game Showcase All-Americans or Under Armour All-Americans. The pitching staff is impressive with Team USA members Chase De Jong of Woodrow Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.), Max Fried of Montclair Prep (Van Nuys, Calif.), Lucas Giolito of Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood, Calif.), Cole Irvin of Servite (Anaheim, Calif.), Cody Poteet of Christian (Bonita, Calif.), Kyle Twomey of El Dorado (Placentia, Calif.), Daniel Starwalt of Granite Hills (El Cajon, Calif.) and Hunter Virant of Camarillo (Calif.). The infield should also be great with All-Americans Corey Oswalt of Madison (San Diego) at first, Ryan McNeil of Nipomo (Calif.) at second and Rio Ruiz of Bishop Amata (La Puente, Calif.) at third. Ruiz is one of four All-American candidates at third. The others are Tanner Rahier of Palm Desert (Calif.), Trey Williams of Valencia (Calif.) and Daniel Robertson of Upland (Calif.).
