Baseball Game Preview: Magdalena Steers vs. Zuni Thunderbirds

Magdalena has gone a perfect 6-0 against Zuni recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Steers will head out to take on the Thunderbirds at 1:00 p.m. Magdalena knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past four matchups -- so hopefully Zuni likes a good challenge.

Magdalena made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Capitan, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Steers blew past the Tigers 29-2 on Tuesday. The Steers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by six runs or more this season.

The team relied heavily on Joseph Zamora, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Javen Tafoya was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.

Zamora wasn't the only one making solid contact: Magdalena kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in four consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Zuni suffered their closest loss since March 22, 2024 on Thursday. They fell just short of Hozho Academy by a score of 4-2. The Thunderbirds have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Magdalena has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Zuni, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-9.

Everything went Magdalena's way against Zuni when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Magdalena made off with a 15-5 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Steers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
