Basketball Recap: Gonzales Takes a Loss

Gonzales lost against La Vernia on January 3rd and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Gonzales Apaches were beaten by the La Vernia Bears 68-34. While losing is never fun, the Apaches can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 828th, while the Bears are ranked 338th).

La Vernia was led to victory by Rikki Alfaro and Lacey Matney. Alfaro went 8 of 19 on her way to 20 points and five steals, while Matney went 6 for 13 en route to 15 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Matney is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ali Burton, who went 5 for 7 en route to 10 points and five boards.

Gonzales has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 13-16 record this season. As for La Vernia, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 15 games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-9 record this season.

Gonzales will take on Cuero at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Cuero will roll in looking for their 13th straight victory, something Gonzales surely won't give up without a fight. La Vernia has already played their next contest (against San Antonio Memorial), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
