Baseball Recap: Monticello Comes Up Short

Monticello extended their losing streak to seven on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-7 in the process. They came up short against the Goshen Central Gladiators, falling 25-1. The Panthers were not able to make up for their defeat to the Gladiators from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

As for Goshen Central, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-3. The game marked their most dominant win of the season so far.

For Goshen Central's part, Anthony Crispino and Grant Musson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Crispino tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Musson tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. At the plate, Crispino went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run, while Musson went 1-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

In other batting news, Goshen Central let Stephen Kovacs and F Mitterbauer run wild. Kovacs fired off six RBI, three runs, and three doubles while going 5-for-5, while Mitterbauer got on base in five of his six plate appearances with four runs, five RBI, and one stolen base. Those six RBI gave Kovacs a new career-high. Nick Smykla also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Monticello and Goshen Central could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps New York Rankings. The Panthers will take on Cornwall Central at 4:15 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (600 vs. 299). Meanwhile, Goshen Central (ranked 157th) will meet Newburgh Free Academy (ranked 34th) at 4:15 p.m. on Friday.
