Abingdon/Avon is 0-3 against Brimfield since May of 2021 but things could change on Tuesday. The Tornadoes will look to defend their home field against the Indians at 4:30 p.m. Abingdon/Avon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.
Abingdon/Avon is headed into Tuesday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Saturday. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at the hands of Bureau Valley.
Abingdon/Avon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alex Foutch, who went 1-for-5 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Brimfield). Their pitcher stepped up to hand Astoria/VIT a 17-0 shutout on Monday. Considering the Indians have won nine games by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Griffin Hougham looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Dane Fagerburg, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Brady Johnson, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
Brimfield always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .605. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Astoria/VIT only posted an OBP of .294.
Brimfield pushed their record up to 14-4-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Abingdon/Avon, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Abingdon/Avon has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Brimfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Abingdon/Avon might still be hurting after the 17-4 loss they got from Brimfield in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. Can the Tornadoes avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
