Baseball Recap: Broomfield Takes a Loss

After flying high against Boulder last Monday, Broomfield came back down to earth. The Eagles fell just short of the Erie Tigers by a score of 4-3 on Thursday. The Eagles' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Maverick Scarpella put in work no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Scarpella was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI.

In other pitching news, Broomfield got a good showing from Clayton Green, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Green has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

Back at the plate, Brendan Fritch was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Broomfield's loss dropped their record down to 8-3. As for Erie, they have been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Broomfield will welcome Monarch at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Eagles are facing the Coyotes at the right time seeing as the Coyotes are stuck on a seven-game losing streak. As for Erie, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Holy Family at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Erie's pitchers better be ready for this one: Holy Family has averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season.
