Newman Central Catholic is 9-1 against Kewanee since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Comets will take on the Boilermakers at 4:30 p.m. Newman Central Catholic will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
Newman Central Catholic had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Mendota on Wednesday. The Comets were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Trojans.
Drake Cole spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on one hit.

On the hitting side, Daniel Kelly and Garret Matznick did most of the damage at the plate: Kelly got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Matznick got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs. Matznick is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Garet Wolfe, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Newman Central Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .537. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .500 or higher in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Kewanee lost 13-3 to Geneseo on Tuesday. The Boilermakers haven't had much luck with the Maple Leafs recently, as the team has come up short the last four times they've met.
Colson Welgat made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
Kewanee's loss dropped their record down to 10-14. As for Newman Central Catholic, their win bumped their record up to 20-3-1.
Newman Central Catholic came out on top in a nail-biter against Kewanee in their previous meeting on Monday, sneaking past 8-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Comets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
