Preview: Van Horn Eagles vs. Sanderson Eagles
The Van Horn Eagles's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Sanderson Eagles at 12:30 p.m. on December 16th. Hopefully Van Horn focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 on Thursday.
On Thursday, Van Horn suffered a tough 55-31 loss at the hands of Marathon. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Van Horn in their matchups with Marathon: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite the defeat, Van Horn had strong showings from Taylor Martinez, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds, and Mallory Mendoza, who scored nine points along with 11 rebounds. Those 11 rebounds set a new season-high mark for her.
Meanwhile, Sanderson's five-game losing streak came to an end on Friday. They escaped with a win against Grandfalls-Royalty by the margin of a single free throw, 1-0. Despite the win, that was the fewest points Sanderson has scored all year.
Van Horn's loss dropped their record down to 7-6. As for Sanderson, their win ended a four-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 5-7.
Everything came up roses for Van Horn against Sanderson when the teams last played back in December of 2022 as the team secured a 48-16 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Van Horn since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
