New Athens hasn't had much luck against Elverado recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. New Athens will be playing in front of their home fans against Elverado at 4:30 p.m. New Athens is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
New Athens is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 18 runs on Monday, they were much more limited against Carlyle on Wednesday. They fell 5-2 to the Indians/Lady Indians.
New Athens saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Bethany Dachsteiner, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one RBI. Another was Morgan Schatte, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one RBI.
Even though they lost, New Athens hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most three strikeouts every time they've taken the field this season.
Elverado never got on the board in their matchup last Tuesday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Sparta on Wednesday. They put the hurt on the Bulldogs with a sharp 13-2 win. The Falcons haven't had any issues with the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.
Maci Cararway was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off eight hits. Cararway was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Bridgett Elder was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Maggie Elson was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-5.
Elverado now has a winning record of 2-1. As for New Athens, their loss dropped their record down to 2-2.
Elverado's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: New Athens hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .327. It's a different story for Elverado, though, as they've only averaged .215. Will they be able to contain New Athens' hitters?
