Baseball Game Preview: Bishop Kenny Crusaders vs. St. Augustine Yellow Jackets

Bishop Kenny is a perfect 4-0 against St. Augustine since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Crusaders will welcome the Yellow Jackets at 6:30 p.m.

Bishop Kenny came into their game on Friday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They lost 8-2 to St. Joseph Academy.

Meanwhile, St. Augustine had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 12-4 margin over the Broncos.

Jordan Petty was a major factor no matter where he played. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. He also allowed no hits, which is notable because St. Augustine is 2-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 8-10 otherwise. Petty was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

In other batting news, Maddux Dowler was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in February. Josiah Vargas was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run.

St. Augustine was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .414. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

St. Augustine's win bumped their record up to 10-11. As for Bishop Kenny, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-17 record this season.

Bishop Kenny was able to grind out a solid victory over St. Augustine when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 8-4. Will the Crusaders repeat their success, or do the Yellow Jackets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
