Preview: Jay Mustangs vs. Holmes Huskies
Jay and Holmes are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2018, but not for long. The Jay Mustangs will finish 2023 at home by hosting the Holmes Huskies at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Jay's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last ten matchups.
Jay pushed their score all the way to 59 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 64-59 hit to the loss column at the hands of Sotomayor. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Jay came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 167th, while Sotomayor is ranked 489th).
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Elijah Baldwin, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 18 rebounds. He set a new season high mark in blocks with five. Another player making a difference was Camrin Garza, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Even though they lost, Jay were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 24 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Holmes was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Tuesday as they fell 53-49 to Sotomayor.
Jay's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-4. As for Holmes, their loss dropped their record down to 8-11.
Jay might still be hurting after the 77-53 loss they got from Holmes in their previous matchup back in February. Can Jay avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
