Basketball Recap: Josslyn Derricott's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Coolidge over Riverdale Baptist

After flying high against Ballou on Wednesday, Coolidge came back down to earth. The Coolidge Colts lost 82-60 to the Riverdale Baptist Crusaders on Thursday. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for the Colts, who until this game were averaging 28.2 points allowed.

Coolidge's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Josslyn Derricott, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. Derricott's afternoon made it six games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Kahmya Dixon was another key player, putting up 18 points.

Even though they lost, Coolidge smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in ten consecutive contests.

Riverdale Baptist's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Za'Hria Higginbotham, who posted 29 points. Those 29 points gave Higginbotham a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Timms, who had 22 points.

The defeat snapped Coolidge's winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 22-3 record. As for Riverdale Baptist, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-6.

Coolidge has already played their next matchup, a 47-36 win against School Without Walls on the 3rd. As for Riverdale Baptist, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 47-24 loss against Mt. Zion Prep Academy on the 1st.
