A feisty cat fight will be fought when the Economedes Jaguars take on the Edinburg Bobcats at 6:00 p.m. on Friday... Economedes is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.5 points per game this season.
Economedes is headed into the matchup having just suffered their biggest defeat since February 6, 2024 on Friday. They were beaten by Los Fresnos 81-45. The loss continues a trend for the Jaguars in their matchups with the Falcons: they've now lost eight in a row.
Economedes might have lost, but man, Nathaniel De La Garza was a machine: he went 11 for 16 on his way to 25 points. That was a full 55.6% of Economedes' points, marking the third time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. Jesse Medrano was another key player, putting up 11 points and three steals.
Meanwhile, Edinburg waltzed into their game on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They breezed by Harvest Christian to the tune of 69-41. Given the Bobcats' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 366th, while Harvest Christian are ranked 896th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Economedes better keep an eye on Axel Navarro. He was instrumental in Edinburg's win, going 6 of 11 on his way to 15 points in addition to six assists and four steals. Navarro's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brayan Martinez, who went 9 for 14 on his way to 20 points and five rebounds.
Edinburg pushed their record up to 19-8 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.8 points per game. As for Economedes, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-10.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Economedes has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 26.8 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Edinburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging 24.2 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
