Basketball Recap: Jamin Pond's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Springstead over Mitchell

If Springstead was riding high fresh off their 77-38 takedown of Citrus last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Springstead Eagles took a 51-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mitchell Mustangs. The matchup was a 21-21 toss-up at halftime, but the Eagles couldn't quite close it out.

Springstead's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jamin Pond, who posted 12 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Sayre was another key player, going 6 for 13 on his way to 15 points.

Mitchell's win on Friday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Cayden Thomas, who went 6 of 10 on his way to 15 points and five steals. With that strong performance, Thomas is now averaging an impressive 2.1 steals per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Wilson, who went 5 of 8 on his way to 13 points and three steals.

Springstead now has a losing record at 5-6. As for Mitchell, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Springstead will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Crystal River at 7:30 p.m. on January 8, 2025. Mitchell will also get a bit of a break before their next contest: they'll face off against Anclote at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025.
