Softball Recap: Hickory Takes a Loss

If Hickory was riding high fresh off their 12-2 takedown of Newton-Conover last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Hickory Red Tornadoes fell just short of the Newton-Conover Red Devils by a score of 9-8 on Friday. The Red Tornadoes were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Red Devils earlier this season, when they won 12-2.

Alyssa Wood spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and six unearned) runs on three hits and racked up 12 Ks. Those 12 strikeouts gave her a new career-high.

At the plate, Layla Abernathy was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. Sierra Hill was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

Hickory's loss dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Newton-Conover, with the win, they broke their 16-game losing streak and moved their record to 1-1.

Hickory wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next match, a 14-4 defeat against East Lincoln on the 11th. As for Newton-Conover, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 19-3 loss against West Caldwell on the 4th.
