Basketball Recap: Mitchell Mustangs vs. Cypress Creek Coyotes
It was a good run, but the Mitchell Mustangs unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Wednesday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 65-64 to Cypress Creek. The match was a 27-27 toss-up at halftime, but Mitchell couldn't quite close it out.
Despite the defeat, Mitchell had strong showings from Priya Jacob, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 19 rebounds, and Kaylana Little, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. Little has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. Aleyah Hall was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Even though they lost, Mitchell smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cypress Creek only pulled down nine offensive rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cypress Creek to victory, but perhaps none more so than Carinne Washington, who scored 23 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Washington has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Deslynn Nickell, who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Mitchell's defeat dropped their record down to 15-9. As for Cypress Creek, they pushed their record up to 10-7 with that victory, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Mitchell will square off against the Lions at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hernando Christian Academy comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 23 points in their last six games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse. As for Cypress Creek, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against the Sharks at 7:00 p.m. Anclote is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak.
