Preview: Western Guilford Hornets vs. Southeast Guilford Falcons
Two dominant players in Aniyah Shannon and Morgan Odom are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Western Guilford Hornets will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against the Southeast Guilford Falcons at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th.
On Monday, Western Guilford was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 59-54 to Southern Alamance.
The losing side was boosted by Leila Henderson, who scored 19 points along with four steals and two blocks. Star Hughes was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with four steals and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Southeast Guilford entered their tilt with Lexington with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Southeast Guilford came out on top against Lexington by a score of 53-40 on Monday.
Southeast Guilford's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sophia Stevens led the charge by scoring 16 points. Another player making a difference was Odom, who scored 16 points.
Western Guilford bumped their record down to 5-8 with that defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Southeast Guilford, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a massive bump to their 8-6 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Western Guilford have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 31.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Southeast Guilford struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 14.1 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Everything came up roses for Western Guilford against Southeast Guilford in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 as the team secured a 88-54 victory. With Western Guilford ahead 44-14 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
