For the first time this season, Spencer Center will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will head out to take on the Riverview East Academy Hawks at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Spencer Center comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
Spencer Center lost 18-6 to Gamble Montessori on Monday.
Jay Wilfong made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in all three of his plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs. Another player making a difference was Alex McNeill, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Riverview East Academy suffered their closest loss since April 6, 2024 on Monday. They fell just short of Taft by a score of 5-3. The Hawks have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Ethan Waters was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off only two hits (and only one walk). With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 5.5 strikeouts per game. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with three stolen bases. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last three times he's played.
In other batting news, Marquise Alexander was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with four stolen bases and one run. Alexander is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: he's snagged at least two every time he's taken the field this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Aiden McGuire, who got on base in both of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.
Spencer Center's record now sits at 0-4. As for Riverview East Academy, their record is now 2-2.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Spencer Center has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Riverview East Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 19.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Spencer Center came out on top in a nail-biter against Riverview East Academy in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 10-8. The rematch might be a little tougher for Spencer Center since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
