The Santa Clara Bruins will face off against the Fremont Firebirds at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Santa Clara is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.5 runs per game this season.
Santa Clara is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 19 runs on Wednesday, they were much more limited against Saratoga on Friday. They took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Falcons. The Bruins have struggled against the Falcons recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.
Santa Clara saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jordyn Guzman, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Another was Kyla Perkins, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, while Fremont put up plenty of runs on Friday, the same can't be said for Lynbrook. The Firebirds blew past the Vikings 17-0. The result was nothing new for the Firebirds, who have now won five matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Charlene Hiek made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over 4.2 innings pitched. Hiek was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with four runs and two stolen bases. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jiyah Caban, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and one stolen base. Victoria Ledezma was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one RBI.
Fremont is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-10 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Santa Clara, they now have a losing record of 10-11.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Santa Clara has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Fremont struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Santa Clara's way against Fremont in their previous meeting back in April, as Santa Clara made off with a 13-3 victory. Do the Bruins have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Firebirds turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
