Softball Recap: Otay Ranch Victorious

Otay Ranch's game on Wednesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Eastlake Titans 2-1. The Mustangs have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Titans, too.

Scarlett Martinez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on seven hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Otay Ranch's win was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Melania Contreras, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Otay Ranch is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-9-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Eastlake, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 16-7-1 record this season.

Coincidentally, Otay Ranch and Eastlake will both be playing Mater Dei Catholic the next time they take the field. The Titans will head out to face the Crusaders at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, while the Mustangs will host them at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
